Dean and Long-time Faculty Member Moving to Ohio
Gary Straquadine, a long-time faculty member in the College of Agriculture and current dean and executive director of Utah State University’s Tooele Regional Campus, has been named department chair for Agricultural Communications, Education and Leadership (ACEL) in the College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University. Straquadine leaves USU at the end of June.
During his years at USU, Straquadine was a faculty member and department head in USU’s Agricultural Systems Technology and Education Department. He also served as associate dean for the College of Agricuture and as vice provost of academic and faculty services. Since 2009, he has been dean of the Tooele and Wasatch campuses, covering regional centers and USU programs in 29 Utah counties.
“Dean Gary Straquadine has served USU well in many capacities over the years,” said Ronda Menlove, USU’s senior vice provost for regional campuses and distance education, in an e-mail announcing Dr. Staquadine’s departure. “He recently led the expansion of the USU Tooele campus and increased faculty hiring and access to degree programs during a period of significant student growth. We will miss him but wish him the best as he pursues this new opportunity.”
During his time at USU, Straquadine was made a Teaching Fellow by the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture; he was named “Teacher of the Year” three times in the College of Agriculture; and he was named the university’s “Advisor of the Year.”
In this move, Straquadine returns to his alma matter — he earned his doctorate at The Ohio State University. Additionally both his father and mother have ties to the university.
“While I have many extended family members — known and unknown — back in Ohio, I will be leaving behind many, many more friends and colleagues in Utah,” Straquadine said.
At the interim at USU, Steve Hawks, associate dean and executive director of the USU Moab campus, will assume responsibility for the USU Southwest Region. Vice Provost Menlove will assume interim responsibility for the USU Tooele campus and the USU Wasatch Front Region.
